History Key Stage One

To develop an understanding that time is always moving on; the ways in which people lived their lives in past times are often very different from the way we live today. This will be illustrated by using stories involving both real and mythical characters.

The stories suitable for this level include the Gunpowder Plot, tales of King Arthur, (either classic medieval and chivalric Knights of the Round Table or Historic Romano-Celtic tales), Robin Hood and the Origins of the Olympics.

These will involve an initial period of discussion about the story with the intention of identifying the order of events, the characters involved, the effects of the characters' actions and how their lives and lifestyles were different from our's today. Would the story's events happen today? What could have been done to change events? Children can then draw characters, events and places from the story and make up their own stories about them (what happened next?).
